Mughal and Early Modern Metalware from South Asia at LACMA: An Online Scholarly Catalogue is an in-depth study of select masterworks in LACMA’s distinguished collection of South Asian metalware written by Stephen Markel. Principally consisting of ceremonial, court, and luxury decorative art objects dating from the 17th-19th centuries, thirteen primary objects are catalogued in extended entries providing detailed object descriptions, vessel morphology, cross-cultural and cross-media sources of possible direct or indirect artistic inspiration, stylistic analyses of affiliated works with numerous comparative illustrations, design symbolism, and considerations of chronology and formal development. An overview introduces the full range of LACMA’s South Asian decorative art holdings and a comprehensive bibliography serves as a primary reference resource.
