patchwork pouch for e-reader
The other day I made a patchwork pouch for my e-reader using various scrap fabrics that I've received from my time at dosa.
As I’ve been moving and settling in, I haven’t had as much time to be in my ceramics studio. Moving, however, made me realize just how many scraps I have stored, so I've been feeling motivated to patch them together and use them.
Recently I’ve been using a Boox e-reader to study Japanese, which I have been seriously learning since my trip last year. The reader comes everywhere with me now, and I thought making a padded pouch for it would be very helpful.
I started by sorting the scraps that I had by, fabric, size, and shape for both the lining and the outer. For the lining, I decided to use some silk habutai for a smooth surface to easily slide the e-reader in and out. I quilted on some cotton batting in random patterns to make it look a bit like a night sky.
When cutting I accidentally made a mistake on which side I wanted to be the front and back. I intentionally patched one side of the outer more than the other. However, the less patched side ended up being the front, and the back side more patched. It's not a big deal, but just something I have to keep in mind for the future.
I actually made another sample about a week ago using a different set of scraps I got from dosa. While I made adjustments to my design from the first sample, I actually prefer the proportions of the older one now that I look at it. Oh well! I'm very happy with the finished pouch, especially with the addition of the silk kumihimo cord I picked up in Kyoto, as well as the abalone button.
As always, I’m very grateful to @dosaflyingfish for all the scraps that I’ve been gifted. I hope this counts as putting them to good use! Once things settle in from the move I'm looking forward to getting back into the ceramics studio.
