on mexico city

I'm not really sure what I was expecting when this trip to Mexico City was planned, but it was a wonderful and unforgettable experience. It was my first time visiting, and many things about the city surprised me. It was quite wet, and rainy a few times despite being quite far inland, and the altitude of the city is far, far higher than I realized (7,350 ft, or 2,240 m). The architecture was extremely varied—quirky, serious and everything in between.

Apart from the food, perhaps my favorite part of the trip was going to visit the Museo Nacional de Antropología (National Museum of Anthropology), followed closely by visits to the homes and studios of both Luis Barragán and Frida Kahlo. I really felt like the ancient art in the anthropology museum really mirrors ancient art across the globe, which is always fascinating. Below are some of my favorite pieces from the museum, and you might notice that many of them draw parallels to Asian art.

I haven't visited many of the architecturally-historic homes in Los Angeles, but my visit to the Luis Barragán house has motivated me to try to visit more of them. I think it's very interesting to see how other creatives live and build their spaces to suit their needs, and it inspires me to do the same.

Though I only visited for about five days, I came home with a lot of inspiration. I'll be studying my photos for the next few days in order to make some sketches for ways I can incorporate my findings into upcoming projects. Stay tuned!
